We have the gift of free choice and because of that we can design our lives to a great degree. We already determined that situations can not always be controlled, but that we can always determine the outcome of an event by the way we choose to respond. E+R=O
Although life coaching is goal orientated and strife to help people fast track their success by helping them to remove limiting beliefs and habits that stand in the way of their success in any life area, we all know that the meaning of life is in the journey and not the destination.
The way you travel can ensure smooth momentum and flow towards your goal, or make for a bumpy ride.
But how do we cruise comfortably?
It is all about the structure of the systems we implement to realize our goals.
James Clear, writer of “Atomic Habits”, says our self control is only as good as the systems we implement.
What are systems then? Systems are the support structures or the support beams of our goals. In a big way structure is time and environmental design.
If you can manipulate and design your environment to support your goal to the greatest degree, you can be sure of success.
How do systems work?
Once again, even before you plan your ultimate goal, you need to decide who the identity is you want to become to be able to realize your goal.
If I want to be a successful writer I need to go and look what the values are that writers implement to write successfully.
The core values of a writer can for instance be: Self- discipline, consistency, diligence, authenticity, creativity and relevancy.
Once we know what a successful writer who will be able to meet his goals, look like, we can determine which systems will support his success best.
He might need to decide to clear a certain amount of time in his schedule every day to write. He might have to find a suitable space where he can write undisturbed. He might have to dedicate a few hours each week to research topics. He might have to find out which foods to eat and exercises to do to keep his mind the sharpest. He might have to let others in his environment know that he is unavailable at certain times of the day and that his writing space is a no-go for them at certain times in order for him to concentrate and get his work done.
Successful environmental design is not just adding but also taking away the structures that no longer support your growth, for instance toxic people, places and situations.
James Clear suggests that you write all your actions down for a typical day to determine where you can improve the systems, that when repeated often enough, will become your habits.
Once you have identified what the core values of the identity you want to become more of should be,and designed your systems to support this identity, you can write a goal that will enable your smoothest journey to success.
